Students honor Arbor Day
It's never too late to plant a tree in honor of Arbor Day

Cokato Elementary students watched as they learned how to properly plant trees around the school in honor of Arbor Day.  Ryan Arvola from Arvola Homes and Trent Johnson of ECI Tree Services showed the students how to plant trees and properly care for them.

Although trees are used for building materials, Arvola Homes understands the importance of renewable resources for the future by planting trees.  Students then received their own trees to take home to plant.

Arbor Day for Minnesota is always the last Friday of April, and it just so happened to be a week after Earth Day which was April 22.

The History of Arbor Day

Arbor Day was founded in the 1800s in Nebraska because of its lack of trees in the state.  Pioneers moving into the Nebraska Territory missed their trees which were needed as windbreaks to keep the soil from blowing around, to be used as fuel, building materials and shade from the sun.

J. Sterling Morton and his wife were nature lovers who moved to Nebraska from Detroit.  He became the editor of Nebraska's first newspaper and advocated the planting of trees.  Morton proposed a tree-planting holiday in January 1872 to the State Board of Agriculture, to be called, "Arbor Day."

April 10, 1872 became the first Arbor Day and prizes were offered to those who planted the largest amount of trees on that particular day.  According to the National Arbor Day Foundation, more than one million trees were estimated to have been planted on the first Arbor Day in Nebraska.

Minnesota honors Arbor Day on the last Friday of April while other states, depending on the tree planting season, may honor it in January or February.  Minnesota's state tree is the Red or Norway Pine.
